Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Emile Brown offers a variety of liposuction options to patients in Baltimore, Washington, D.C., Annapolis and the surrounding areas of Maryland. Many patients have stubborn areas of fat that can be difficult to get rid of with diet and exercise alone. Stubborn fat can accumulate almost anywhere on the body, but liposuction offers a successful solution for body recontouring and sculpting.
Liposuction is one of the greatest innovations in plastic surgery because it allows large volumes of fat to be extracted while leaving virtually no scars. We offer our patients the latest technology in power-assisted liposuction always using the S.A.F.E. liposuction technique The SAFE technique helps achieve a smooth appearance, and reduce the risk of any rippling or contour abnormalities after surgery.
- Improved contours of the chin, abdomen, arms, buttocks, flanks, and thighs
- Enhanced skin tightening via stimulation of collagen production
- More shapely transitions from the lower back to the buttock
- Opportunity to use fat removed with liposuction for augmentation of other areas such as the face, breasts, or buttocks
If you have specific areas of stubborn fat that you would like to target, then you are a potential candidate for liposuction. However, liposuction is not an alternative to weight loss. Those considering liposuction should be within their ideal weight range and be committed to a healthy lifestyle. Diet and exercise will be an important part of maintaining liposuction results. Liposuction can effectively treat the abdomen, thighs, upper arms, and flanks, as well as smaller areas like under the chin, in the bra area, and above the knee. Liposuction can be performed alone but is often used in combination with other contouring procedures for optimal results.
There are two main steps in the liposuction procedure. In the first stage, a solution containing lidocaine (which numbs the area) and epinephrine (which constricts the blood vessels in order to decrease bruising) is injected into the area. In the second stage, a cannula connected to a high-power suction device is used to extract the fat. Smaller areas of liposuction can often be performed without the need for general anesthesia, which reduces costs and makes recovery a breeze.
Your recovery time after liposuction will depend on the number, size, and location of the treatment areas. Patients can expect the majority of swelling and discomfort to be present during the first 1-2 weeks of recovery. Patients should get up and moving as soon as the day of treatment to get the blood flowing and help with healing. You will also be instructed to wear a compression garment over the treatment area 24/7 for the first four weeks after surgery. This garment will help to minimize swelling and promote skin contraction. Two garments will be provided to you at the time of your procedure. Since there are not long incisions, there are no activity restrictions for patients after liposuction. Exercise can gradually be increased at your own pace, based on patient comfort and recovery. Once the swelling has diminished, patients can enjoy their improved contour. To maintain this new look, patients should maintain their healthy weight with the proper diet and regular exercise.
